Health care in San Felipe

(How does the town of “No Bad Days” measure up?)

 clip_image002

With the huge rise in the number of people buying homes and vacationing in San Felipe, the question has come up about the available health care in this resort town.  Can this once small shrimping village and its medical professionals and facilities keep up with the growing number of residents and visitors?  Especially considering the rise in the number of retirees in San Felipe, this is definitely an area of interest.

There are typically 3 things to consider when you ask the question “does the town have the proper resources to take care of its residents”.  The first is the total population.  San Felipe’s average population is approximately 21,250 throughout the year.  The second factor to consider is the total area of the town, or square miles.  The entire town of San Felipe is approximately 40 square miles.  This is from Mi CASA del MAR at La Hacienda and the San Felipe Airport, to the northern most campo and the mountain side homes.   Third, and the most important factor to consider, is the amount of the particular resource available.  In this case we are looking at the medical and health care facilities along with emergency medical transport (ambulance services).  So, how does San Felipe measure up when it comes to taking care of the residents of this booming town?  What we found was nothing short of impressive.

To make a good solid comparison, we looked at 4 other very well known cities.  We wanted to find out how San Felipe looked when it came to the population per square mile and the hospitals and ambulance services per population.  Here is how we look.

Compare San Felipe

Data as of 2003 census  LosAngeles, CA   Phoenix, AZ  San Diego, CA  San Francisco,CA  San Felipe, Baja CA
 Total Population  3,819,951  1,388,416  1,223,400  776,733  21,250
Area in square miles  469 square miles  475 square miles  324 square miles  47 square miles  40 square miles
 Population per sq. mi.  8,145  2,923  3,776  16,526  531
 Number of Hospitals  25  14  19  18  5
 Number of Ambulance Service  18  9  6  7  7
 Hospital per number of people  152,798  99,173  64,389  43,152  4,250
 Ambulance service per number of people  212,220  154,268  203,900  110,962  3,035

So,what does it all mean?  To put it simply, San Felipe far surpasses them all.  It means that there are fewer people for every square mile.  It means that the amount of people per hospital or ambulance service is far fewer in San Felipe.  This gives greater availability for healthcare and medical attention to the people of San Felipe than any of the other cities (by far).   Most of all, it means that the town of San Felipe truly cares about its residents and visitors and their well-being.

Here is just one example of the pride and care you will find when in need of medical attention in San Felipe.  The following is an account by Mi CASA del MAR's Marketing Services Manager, Katrina McCullough.

“I’m sure you can imagine my panic when I woke up at 4am and was suddenly having a very difficult time breathing. My fiancé rushed me down to the St. James Infirmary. I was admitted immediately and put on oxygen. The doctor diagnosed it as an asthma attack brought on by allergies to my own cats. He put me on another breathing apparatus to help re-inflate the bronchial tubes and the RN gave me an IV of cortisone. I’ll admit I had my own concerns about the healthcare in San Felipe, but I don’t anymore. When I left St. James I was breathing just fine. The staff was courteous, attentive and knowledgeable. And the best part, aside from being able to breathe normally again, was that it was no where near as costly as it would have been in the states. I feel safe here knowing there is an exemplary hospital very near by!”  -Katrina McCullough-
